Black Canyon

BJ Posted on May 20th about May 11th: Hurray for great cell reception!! Now to catch up.Black Canyon NP is amazing. It was difficult to really gauge anything as it just messes with your mind how steep and narrow it all is. We drove along the rim, stopping at all the pullouts, and then drove to the bottom to see the same along the river. It was incredible, even more so because the park was nearly empty!! For anyone headed west along I-70, it is only one hour south of Grand Junction and is completely worth it. Ray and Katie also finished earning a second Junior Ranger badge!

May 10th

BJ Posted on May 16th: Sorry for the break, I will try and catch up as the spotty internet allows.

We left Rocky Mountain NP just in time, as there was snow expected to hit in the afternoon. It was already cold and raining while we packed up in the morning. We headed south towards Denver and went through some neat canyons along US-6 to connect with I-70. On the way up to the Eisenhower tunnel the snow started to fall, thankfully the west side was sunny and clear. We drove until Grand Junction before turning south to the city of Montrose, and Black Canyon NP.

May 9th

Our last day at beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park!! We got an early start this morning so we could enjoy the morning sunlight on the mountains. The first stop was Bear Lake where the trail was still covered in snow, you can't see it, but in the photo of Ray, over his left shoulder is the peak I climbed with my old Scout troop 14 years ago. We also hiked around Sprague lake and got some great views and relaxing benches to enjoy. We finished our last evening with some more 4-legged visitors today the campsite as the deer slowly moved down the hill. We are sad to leave such an amazing place, but looking forward to seeing our 2nd National Park, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison!!
